Juan Carlos Torrico

Biography

Juan Carlos Torrico is a prominent Peruvian film director, screenwriter, and educator, best known as the founder of the Lima Film School (ECL)—a key institution for the training of new generations of filmmakers in his country. With a robust career that bridges artistic creation and pedagogy, Torrico made a powerful entrance onto the national film scene in the mid-1980s by directing the iconic musical and socially-themed film "Los Shapis en el mundo de los pobres" (1985), a box-office success that captured the chicha cultural phenomenon in Peru. He later expanded his filmography with works offering a critical, urban perspective, such as "Asia, el culo del mundo" (1992) and "Porka Vida" (2004). Committed to the dissemination and analysis of audiovisual language, he has dedicated much of his career to specialized instruction in screenwriting, directing, mise-en-scène, and film history, establishing himself as a fundamental and influential figure within the Peruvian film and cultural industry.
