Bobby Fischer Amerika'nın satranç alanında görmüş olduğu en büyük yetenektir. 1972 Dünya Satranç Şampiyonası gelip çatar ve Fischer ile Rus şampiyon Boris Spassky arasındaki epik maç böylece başlamış olur. Ruslar o döneme kadar satrançı domine eden taraftır ancak ilk kez Amerika'nın satranç masasında Rusya'ya karşı galip gelmesi ihtimali doğmuştur.
