En son Before Midnight filmiyle izleyici karşısına çıkan Richard Linklater'ın senaryosunu yazıp yönettiği film, çıkış noktası olarak yakın zamanda boşanmış bir çiftin, Mason ve Olivia'nın hikayesine odaklanıyor. Sahip oldukları tek çocukları ise artık anne ve babasının bir arada yaşamadığı gerçeğine alışmak ve bu yabancı düzen içerisinde yaşamayı öğrenmek zorunda. Çocuğun 6 yaşında başlayan bu yeni tecrübesini 12 yıl boyunca sürecek olan bir büyüme evresine yayan yönetmen, bu süreç boyunca yaşananları beyaz perdeye aktarıyor.
